Really depends on what you want to do.

XMD itself is already a shopping and eatery area. You will find Ah Zhong Mian Xian, which is famous in Taipei.

Danshui Old street will be interesting to shop and eat. Try the Muah Chee there.

Eslite Bookstore will be a place for you if you are keen to buy books, CDs and DVDs. It is opened 24 hours.

Visit some of the night markets,eg. Shilin, Shi Tah etc.

Wufen Pu will be where you want to go for clothings, though you can also find some street stalls along Zhongxiao road.

The vicinities around Zhongxiao Fuxing and Taipei Railway stations are also interesting to walk around. Plenty of shopping, cafes, eateries.

And if you have time, I would also suggest you make a trip to Taroko which is near Hualian. It is 2 - 3 hours by train from Taipei to go to Hualian. You can depart early in the morning and return in the same evening, if you do not mind the long hours. Otherwise, just spend a night in Hualian. Taroko is simply beautiful. You will love it.

dun listen to wat people say, go off the beaten track and get lost to experience the real taiwan.

Visit the town of Wulai if you like mountains, hot springs to bathe in (free in the river), I have a report on this with Trip Adviser.

Also visit shrine of Sun Yat Sen and watch the changing of the guards its quite awesome. If you have some time go to a restuarant called Modern Toilet the kids will love it just for the novelty but also the food is great. Shilin night market has the best shopping.
