Day Trip: Yingge, Sanhsia & Dasi

Need some advice from Taiwan experts. I was unable to find a recent thread with information on these areas.

I%26#39;m planning on a day trip to Yingge and Sanxia, and some may even include Dasi. But I cant find more information on the transportation and recommendations on these places.

I%26#39;ve found that you can reach Yingge via a short train ride and subsequently there are buses to Sanxia from Yingge.

Can I check:

- Upon arriving at Yingge train station, are directions to the old street and museum easily accessible? Dont have any maps of it on hand!

- Where do I find the buses that goes to Sanxia?

- Same question, is it easy to move around in Sanxia?

- How do I go back to Taipei from Sanxia?

- If there is still time for Dasi, how do I go about that?

From basic research these places seems not far from Taipei City and not alot of ground to cover. So can I say I probably can finish by evening?

Thanks all in advance! :)

Day Trip: Yingge, Sanhsia %26amp; Dasi

I have not got the chance to do Sanxia yet but did enquire about it some time back. Maybe you would like to refer to this:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293910-i9303-k214鈥?/a>

Day Trip: Yingge, Sanhsia %26amp; Dasi

thanks for referring me to the thread... I took down the buses to take from Sanhsia to XMD. :)

any more advice will be much appreciated!

I would do Sanxia first, then Yingge, because 1) Yingge requires more time to browse the Ceramics Street and visit the Ceramics Museum; and 2) after a long day, you can take the train back to Taipei from Yingge Railway Station (30 min. ride).

Sanxia Old Street doesn%26#39;t require much time at all, and with the famous Chingshui Tzushi Temple just around the corner, both can be covered pretty quickly.

I%26#39;m not familiar with taking the bus from Yingge to Sanxia; by car, they%26#39;re approx. 20 min. apart.

The website below says that you can easily walk from Yingge Railway Station to Ceramics Street. From the photo on the link, do take note of what the official Ceramics Street looks like, because there are several streets lined with pottery shops, which can be confusing.

http://yingge.tw/

Do not go on Mondays.

Happy treasure hunting~

Thanks for the advice, that really helps!

I did not think of doing it the other way round cos most reviews do Yingge-Sanxia. Sounds good since I stay at Ximending where buses leave for Sanxia

Any idea how early are these streets active? If I reach Sanxia in the late morning, i%26#39;d think its OK? Will appreciate if anyone who has taken taxi from Sanxia-Yingge or vice versa can advise how much it takes... Since Ive 4 pax, was wondering if taxi can be an option too!

Based on the travel time from Sanxia to Yingge (20 min., 30 min. tops), estimated taxi fare would be NT250~400---that%26#39;s really a rough guess, as you can see. The next time I take a taxi, I%26#39;ll ask the driver if he has any idea---so watch this post. (When is your trip?)

I don%26#39;t know what time the shops in Sanxia open, but the ones in Yingge aren%26#39;t fully open till noon. On Mondays, when the Ceramics Museum is closed, many of the shops are closed as well. The museum closes at 5PM, last tickets sold at 4:30.

www.ceramics.tpc.gov.tw/en-us/Home.aspx

Thanks so much calicocat, really appreciate it! if i cant find the bus to Yingge may just try for a taxi!

I tentatively have decided on Taipei-Sanxia late morning (temple and old street)-bus to Yingge in afternoon (if i can find the bus stop)-museum, old street and food-train to Songshan Train Station (where I can do my usual Raohe shopping!)

Erm I%26#39;m flying in a few hours%26#39; time and going for this day trip next Tues. Maybe I can update here when im back for the benefit of everyone! :)

ChingJing - via tour package or F&E???

Hi all,

I am planning to incorporate a 2D1N stay in Ching Jing while my friends and I are in Taipei in early March before heading to TaiChung.

Am wondering if it would be more advisable to take a package tour or go F%26amp;E to catch the buses and arrange accomm separately?

For Tour (off ezTravel website)

Package @ NT2794 per person.

It includes:

2-way transportation (Taipei/ ChingJing/ Taichung)

1 night accom @ 娓呭鑼插績鍦?(01x dbl and 01 x triple)

1 dinner

1 breakfast

Bus schedule:

From Taipei to ChingJing: 0645/ 1150

From ChingJing to Taichung: 1310/ 1640

For F%26amp;E,

I saw that there is a Taipei - ChingJing direct bus at NT850 one way, but I couldn%26#39;t locate one for ChingJing - TaiChung sector.

How much would that cost and does anyone has the timings for that sector?

Hotels wise, how is 娓呭鑼插績鍦?and 娓呭鍚嶄汉娓″亣鏉???

After doing some research, I am tempted to do a 3D2N instead. ChingJing looks really nice!!

Thanks in advance! If you have any suggestions, please feel free!

Trains to Hualien - Breakfast and Dinner

Hi,

Since I am staying near the Taipei Main Station and I will be taking the morning train that departs before 7am.

May I know where can I get breakfast in that hour to be eaten in the train?

Also on the way back, I will be taking the 7pm+ train back to Taipei. May I know where can I get dinner then? I know Mr Lu may recommend us to buy the fish soup (read it from some where) but eating soup stuff in a moving train is a challenge to me.

Thanks.

hello, leoca1, when are u going to Alishan? I am going on 1st Feb which is not the Cherry Blossom season. I%26#39;m staying in xin xin minsu and was quoted 1800NT for a 4 person room. As for the train from taipei to chaiyi, it depends on the timing u board the bus. some timing has discount.

    Thanks for your reply(Clayhuang1201).

    Breakfast In Taoyuan

Hello. I have a few hours in transit at Taoyuan airport and wanted to see if there was a nice place to get some breakfast in Taoyuan City. Also, does anyone know if there is an early morning market in the area?

    Thanks.

    Breakfast In Taoyuan

Taiyuan city is not that near the airport, it%26#39;s almost 40 min%26#39;s travel to town so unless you have more than three hours to kill, do not think it%26#39;s agood idea to venture out.

try 南崁,it on the midway between airport and Taoyuan city.

  • 7-day trip rpt (Shangrila Farm, cabbie ChengGF, Stone Minsu)

I am back from my 7-day trip (12-18 Nov). Thks local destination experts and all forumers for help!

Here is my report, with comments on Shangrila Farm, cabbie Cheng GuangFa and Stone Minsu which have received some complains recently.

    Day 1:

Arrived at 5:40pm. Took freego bus directly to XMD Neijiang Hotel. (A: NT140, C: NT70). Checked in to hotel (value for $, accepts card, friendly receptionist, I settled bill daily, 2-bedder @NT1480, 4-bedder @NT2380; add NT200 for the 2-bedder room for Fri-Sun). Had dinner (beef noodles) at 老董牛肉面, disappointed as I went to this award-winning eatery with high expectation. Bought stored value MRT card悠游卡. Took MRT to Taipei station to collect the train tickets which I have booked online the day before. I couldn’t get the 9:40am tickets (it’s a Sat, so I supposed demand is high) I want from Hualien, settled for 7:35am tickets.

    Day 2:

Had sandwiches and packet drinks the hotel provides for breakfast. Left some luggage behind before boarding MRT to Taipei station to catch 8:30am 自强train to Luodong. Arrived at 10am. Bought some titbits (牛舌柄,金枣) from the shop at the train station. Took cab (fixed price of NT300/cab) to Shangrila Leisure Farm. I’ve paid my deposit when a former gave feedback that the fruit farm has been destroyed by typhoon recently. Decided to go ahead and I didn’t regret it. It is a place to rest and relax. So it doesn’t really matter too much if there are fruits to pluck. Anyway, most part of the farm has been restored. There was only some minor work left. We took the 2 trails, (easy), enjoyed the view, butterflies and see-saw rides along the way. Kids enjoyed making big bubbles in the farm compound. Meals (breakfast+dinner which u can swop to lunch) were better than expected. At night, there was some dumpling making, top spinning activities. Flying of big lantern 天灯which carried our wishes was fun.

    Day 3:

After breakfast in the resort, took cab to catch 8:29am train to Hualien. Arrived at 9:35am. Cabbie Chen GuangFa received us at the station. I have read some feedback saying that his service level has dropped and he put different group of guests together w/o seeking their permission. I was observing him throughout the day and my conclusion is he is a good guide. He cares a lot about his reputation on the web and is conscious in making sure that his guests are comfortable and eats at places which serve unique food at good price. He bought us extra dish of kampong chicken for lunch (A: NT250, C: FOC). He volunteered to change the train tickets for Taipei to our ideal time slot, provided good narration at various stops in Taroko Gorge, suggested places to take photos, took care of our safety, entertained kids, bargained for dinner (same price as lunch) and fireworks.

In Taroko, Water curtain cave 水帘洞is a must-try. Bring ponchos, torch lights, leave your shoes outside the cave before entering the cave.

We enjoyed the fireworks (Mdm Liu of the minsu recorded and cut into CD for us) which we played within the compound of Stone Minsu, 10 mins of fun at NT1,200. We watched the 8:10pm Ami Aboriginal performance which is good. Requested Mdm Liu to bring us for wanton扁食, nice. She treated us to 烤地瓜. We bought some muah chee too.

Stone Minsu has also received some complain in this forum recently, which I read just before I left. Decided to stick to my reservation. From the interaction we have with Mdm Liu, we found that she’s sincere and hospitable. My guess is that there could be some misunderstanding between her and the guests which had lead to the unhappiness.

    Day 4:

Breakfast at minsu is nice, choice of toasted bread with pizza toppings or burger. Took 9:40am train back to Taipei. Arrived at noon. After leaving bags at hotel, we had lunch at Xinye restaurant 欣叶 @ZhongShan station, food is ok, but pricey, paid NT5200+ for 11 pax. Went to join the crowd for JJ 林俊杰签唱会at Taipei station. Applied to Youth Traveller’s Card for 2 kids to enjoy discount at places like Miramar Ferris Wheel, Taipei 101. Also gets free gift from DingTaiFeng鼎泰丰. Proceeded to Wufenpu, had dinner at 胡须张鲁肉饭.

    Day 5:

Took train to CKS Memorial Hall. There was some protest within the compound. Proceeded to Beitou 北投hotspring, had lunch at 1 of the noodle house near 新北投MRT. Note that they have sessions of 2.5 hours with breaks. Each session is supposed to accommodate 50 pax. The timing seems to be a bit off from what I got from the web, we joined the 1:30pm session. You need to wear swim wear and bun up hair for ladies. There are both cold and hot spring pools. Nice. Beware of the hottest pool, at 42 degree.

Made a trip to the museum next door, followed by Hell Valley 地热谷(not to be missed) before taking MRT to Danshui 淡水. Had noddles 阿忠面线at XMD for supper. Very good and cheap (NT40 or NT55).

    Day 6:

Took MRT to Shilin for Shilin President Residence. There was a chrysanthemum exhibition outside the compound, beautiful. Unfortunately, the residence was closed for renovation till 17 Nov 09. Took cab to National Palace Museum, spent 3 hours there (must leave big bags at entrance), browsing the various (impressive) exhibits. Must-see is the 翠玉白菜. Lunch at the dim-sum restaurant is costly. An unexpected highlight of the trip is meeting Mr International contestants from various countries. The teenagers were trilled taking pix with them.

Took cab to Martyr’s Shrine to see the change of guards at 3pm, a nice 20-min session.

Took cab to Miramar for Ferris Wheel. If you dare, choose the transparent cars. Had dinner at the food court, another pleasant surprise, food is reasonably-priced and good.

Took free shuttle to Jiantan MRT for Shilin NM. Saw Singapore Superstar finalist 何维健 performing.

    Last Day:

Took MRT to SYS Memorial Hall to watch 9am change of guard, not as impressive as the one at Martyr’s Shrine as it’s indoor. Walked for 15 min to Taipei 101. It was good as it provided lots of photo-taking opportunity with the world’s tallest building in the background. Went to the 88th and 89th floor of Taipei 101 as the 91st floor is closed. A bit hazy, perhaps view in later part of the day would be better. Took cab to DingTaiFeng at Zhongxiao for lunch, again, happy with the quality, price, service is nice too. Walked to Eslite诚品, bought some books. Took MRT back to hotel to pick up luggage. Took cab to Taipei station with intention of taking GuoGuang bus to airport, but found MPV cabbies who charged only NT700. We took that to airport after our last minute shopping at the underground mall.

    We returned to Singapore, HAPPY!

7-day trip rpt (Shangrila Farm, cabbie ChengGF, Stone Minsu)

    Hi Mrslye,

you mention mr chen put different group of guests together. Then u all split cost?

7-day trip rpt (Shangrila Farm, cabbie ChengGF, Stone Minsu)

Thanks for your review. Why do we need to leave our shoes outside the water curtain cave? Is that the requirement?

    Hi,

Abt Mr Chen putting together groups for day trip:

It%26#39;s not my experience. It%26#39;s what I read from a fellow forumer who said they were grouped with others w/o them knowing. The forumer also commented that cabbie Chen was not providing good svc. I read that before I left and was wondering if I should proceed with my reservation of svc with Chen or should I go with cabbie Lu.

In the end, I still proceeded with Chen, no regrets at all. Good svc, caring guide.

I asked him abt travellers sharing his Toyota Wish, he said he is open to that and has done so. What he will do is he will check with the guests if they are OK. If all parties are OK, cost is split, ie guests gain.

Abt leaving shoes outside water curtain cave:

As you walk deeper into the pitch dark cave, you will reach the mini waterfall, your footwear will get wet. If you don%26#39;t mind or are wearing water-proof footwear, you can wear shoes into the cave. It%26#39;s really not a requirement from anyone.

    Hi mrslye,

Is towel %26amp; toiletries providing at the hot spring?

    Thanks!:)

    Hi,

This particular hotspring I visited is the Beitou public outdoor pool.

Addr: 6 Chungshan Rd, next to the Hotspring museum.

Walk 15 mins leisurely along Chungshan Rd from Xinbeitou MRT station. Admission is NT40.

You have to bring own towels and toiletries. Imaging what would you do at those public swimming pools in Singapore.

I chose this as it allows swim wear, some of the hotspring at the resorts/hotels that I%26#39;ve checked observe naked rule.

May I know how to book a room in Shangrila Leisure farm ? thanks

Shangrila Leisure Farm online reservation: https://www.ezhotel.com.tw/shangrilas/

    Thanks mrslye for sharing...

So despite the minor restoration work, is Shangrila Farm and Yilan still worth the visit?

What is the name of the hot spring you went at Beitou? How cold the the cold spring? Thanks!!

    Hi,

Abt Shangrila Leisure Farm: I would it depends on what u were looking for: if u are ok with those activities mentioned in my post above, then it%26#39;s a place to rest and relax.

If the group is looking forward to day with more activities/actions, then I consider other day-trip like to Leofoo Themepark which is just an hour+ trip away from Taipei. I will check that out during my next trip.

Abt the hotspring, we went to the public hotspring next to the hotspring museum. They have 冷泉(20deg) ,温泉 (40-42deg),热泉(%26gt;42deg). Despite being winter, we enjoyed the outdoor pools very much, soaking in cold and hot springs. The trick we learnt from other people there to stay comfortable in cold spring is: the moment u r in the cold water, stay VERY STILL, and hope people around you do the same, don%26#39;t create any movement in the water. It worked wonderfully!

    hi,

how did u get to Shangrila Farm?

    hi..

i have stayed in rainbow before but it was fully booked for my next trip in march. any other suggestion which is abt the same budget as rainbow? SGD90-100 per night. would prefer ximending due to the familarity from the previous stay. i%26#39;m open to suggestions from other locations too..

    thanks!!

anyway, is lilai hotel good? seems very budget..

    Hi alanthegreat,

Have you tried TS hotel? We stayed here for 6 nights abt. 2 weeks ago. We paid $1880 per night for a superior suite with breakfast. The bed is king-sized %26amp; comfortable and the room, beddings and towels are clean. The hotel is very close to XMD and Ximen MRT but without the hustle and bustle when you get out of the hotel. Their frontdesk staff are friendly and helpful. They are also very prompt in replying e-mails.

    Their website is www.tshotel.com.tw

    Cheers!

orange is nice, but it seems to be a bit further from the train station ( i dont really trust their map )..

and does anybody know if the surrounding area is almost as crowded/buzzing like xmd at night?

    Hi alan,

there are two orange hotels, the one(Guanqian)just opened this month is near the Taipei station (about 200m). its loacation is great.

    another one(kaifeng)is between Taipei station(about 600m) and XMD(400m).

nice room! But it%26#39;s already fully booked till Apr-09.

Please check again,I think some are still available.

The rooms rate for NT1,900 are all fully booked till Apr-09. Yes, there%26#39;s still available rooms for higher rates. : )

Can try Futustar, very close to ximen mrt station, in fact very close! Not as noisy as the street where Rainbow is located tot.

If you stay in FutureStar, make sure you stay on the 7th floor. I heard they are newer compared to 8th and 9th floor.

  • Penghu hotel

Please can anyone recommend a hotel in Magong City, Penghu? I don鈥檛 drive nor ride a bike so I suppose it is best to stay in the city itself for convenience. There are lots of hotel but I do not know which is actually in the city itself. I was looking at An-I hotel which seems very nice and reasonably priced but I think it is quite far from the city? Also, if anyone can share anything regarding Penghu, that would be greatly appreciated.

    Penghu hotel

    I stayed at 鍚夌編娓″亣鏉?when I visited Penghu in 2007.

Comfortable high rise hotel right next to the Magong harbor. In the morning you get to watch the navy destroyers start their engines and sail out to sea. Plenty of restaurants around the area, and the hotel is connected to the ferry terminal (to Taiwan) on the ground floor.

You should spend a couple days away from Magong. Magong may be the capital of Penghu, but to truly appreciate the beauty of this archipelago you need to visit the outlying smaller islands. The ferries leave from the tourist information center, which is just a short walk from the hotel.

Thank you very much. I will take the advice of pcheng re hotel. I am going from Chiayi, ferry arrives around 12 noon, so maybe book a taxi and take a half day around the island (I understand three islands are linked by bridges) for the first day, then next morning maybe an island tour. Which island would you recommend? I am taking the 4 pm ferry from Penghu back to Chiayi.

lu24759 thanks, I am going in early July which I understand is peak. I personally prefer off peak (less crowd) but since this is the first time and I am not sure how bad the winds will be, better don%26#39;t try my luck.

The more popular islands include Qi-Mei, Bai-Sha, and Ji-Bei. You can forget about the later 2 because they are likely closed for the season.

As for Qi-Mei,it is 2 hours away by ferry from Magong. So to make it back before 4 p.m. you must catch the first boat in the morning. Check with the tourist info center at Magong harbor for time and schedule.

Oops, sorry, if you are going in July then it is peak season, and both Bai-Sha and Ji-Bei island will be open.

OK thanks. Guess I have to take the tour that suits my schedule best.

    客運 & trains

    Hi

This is my first trip to Taiwan. I am trying to digest a huge chunk of information and need some clarification with regards to transportation.

1)For 客運 buses, do i have to buy the tickets first before boarding or can i just board the bus at any of the designated stopping point like 公車.

2)For trains, if i do not advance book, is it possible to purchase a same day/next available train ticket at the train station itself.

    Thanks

    %26#23458;%26#36939; %26amp; trains

For long distance coaches, you must buy the ticket prior to boarding. The gate agent (or bus driver) will collect the ticket at the door.

For trains, you can buy same day tickets at the station. Only use advance booking if you absolutely must be on that train; or you trip falls on a busy holiday weekend.

  • Westin Taipei's Location

Am going to Taipei in Feb and have booked Westin. I was told the hotel is in the CBD district and is really quiet at night.

Someone also mentioned to me there was some MRT construction last time she was at Westin.

Would appreciate if anyone could advise if the train station is already in operation? If so, which station is this?

Would also like to find out from those who knows the place well if there are any restaurants or cafes around where I can get breakfast and maybe dinner/supper?

Any advice is much appreciated. Many thanks!!!

    Westin Taipei's Location

Westin Taipei is currently served by MRT Nanking E. Road station. It has nothing to do with the new line under construction now, since it takes like 5 more years before that can be fininshed.

Yes the area is quiet at night, but not motionless. It%26#39;s only one station away from Zhongxiao Fuxing station, which is one of the major shopping area of the city. You can also visit other spots easily by MRT.

I can%26#39;t recommand restaurants in that area but I%26#39;m sure that you can find many of them near the hotel. You just have to walk around, I think.

    Regrads.

    Westin Taipei's Location

if cost is no object, would suggest u try the various Chinese restaurants in the hotel itself, very good.

Thanks Poorjar %26amp; Maria for the advice and suggestions!

Found the Nanjing E. mrt station. Looks quite a distant from the Taipei main station.

I read about Caesarpark hotel and found the location to be really good. But pictures of the hotel shows the rooms look rather dull and dated. Since i%26#39;m going to stay there for 10 days, I%26#39;m hoping for something more pleasant. Read that they have done some renovation, but don%26#39;t see many pictures reflecting the after renovated hotel. Well, at worse, I%26#39;ll stick to Westin...

Have u considered HYatt, while it is not near the TMS, N neither is it right on top of the MRT (though station not too far away), the location is quite good as just right next to TP101.

I just came back from Taipei! Stuck to my original choice of Westin Taipei... Location wise, much better than I expected.

Hotel factor, staff was ok. How should I say this... they were friendly when approached, but not the kind who goes out of the way to create an exceptional impression on the guests. More of the sort who does as they are asked, but wouldn%26#39;t take initiatives.

I stayed a superior room, which is probably the lowest class in the hotel. Though they were not cheap in comparison with the other hotels, the amenities were shockingly bare compared to other Westins i%26#39;ve stayed in. Nothing luxurious about the room, but it was clean. All we got were shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, cotton buds, shower cap %26amp; a comb. ONE bar of soap, which is not replenished/changed daily. We had to call housekeeping for new soap. No toothbrush, etc.

We had wanted to try the Chinese restaurants that mariatan had suggested. there were 2-a Shanghainese %26amp; a pekingnese. we went to the one @ basement 1 one day, but found the prices way too expensive, so we didn%26#39;t try that out.

Would i stay there again? hmm... maybe, but i%26#39;d like to try hyatt next :)

    Yang Ming Shan blooming flowers

Hi, I am trying to put yang ming shan on a week day into my itinerary but was not able to. Its currently yang ming shan flower festival, which mean there will be a lot of people. The only slot to put in yang ming shan for my itinerary, is 28th Feb 09 which happens to be a saturday and a public holiday. Will it be flooded with lots of people? How is the crowd during week day? Will there be less crowd?

Does anyone know how much time is needed to cover all the flower attraction area in http://2009yms.com.tw/page2.html?

What time does the sky darken at yang ming shan?

    Thank you.

    Yang Ming Shan blooming flowers

Weekends are crowded for sure.If you%26#39;re there only for the flowers n wants to cover only the few sites listed on the link u attached, 3-4 hrs inclusive of transport would suffice.YMS, however, has alot more to offer, if u want to do the whole area, it would take around 6 hrs at least, n if hot spring is aincluded, even longer. So, in short, plan 1/2 a day if only to see flowers, one to cover everything.

I am guessing that its shorter than from Taipei which is why you suggested so.

Also, i have actually reserved Train tickets from Taipei to Hualien and Hualien to Songshan already.

How do i cancel them if i am changing my itinery?

    Read the flwg about Wufenpu:

They are available on Sunday but maybe close earlier after PM 9:00.

Monday is reserved for wholesalers, even though you still can go, but may not get services as good as usual.

So its not advisable to go to Wu Fen Pu on Sun after 9pm or Mondays?

    Hi phantasml,

Maybe you can consider to go to Wu Fen Pu on Friday.

After Jiufen you can go back to Taipei, if you don%26#39;t want to miss the night view of Taipei101,but it will be very rushed.

    Hi Lu and All,

Was thinking of going back to Yang Ming Shan for night scenery after sunset at Danshui (And it might be raining according to weather reports).

Do you think its possible and which night market would be closer to Yang Ming Shan if so, Shilin or Shida?

    Tks for all the replies.

    Rgds,

    Tianan

    1. Frankly speaking ,the night scenery of YMS is great, but I don%26#39;t know how you can get there in night.

    2.Shilin NM.is closer.

ps:I still think about if you should go back to Taipei or not (after Jiu Fen),coz the trains at Taipei station are better than at Renfan%26#39;s.

    Tks Lu once again.

    Think the itinery is ok.

Was thinking to go to 文化後山 area to eat.

Exact address is 111 台北市 士林區 東山路25巷81弄99號 .

    Searching how to go thou.

Perhaps the same way as i go out, mtr from danshui to xin bei tou then bus 230 or cab in.

Out to Jientan/Shilin will be Bus 260 or Red 5 or cab to nearest mtr i guess. But if not taking cab then i am not sure if the walk down is dangerous or not.

    Rgds,

    Where to stay?

Am researching on the choice of accomm in Ching Jing and would be very grateful if anyone can help me on this.

What are the pros and cons of staying near the Information Centre area where the Starbucks and 7/11 are accessible versus staying nearer to Green Green??

Are the views just as nice for the hotels in both areas?

We don%26#39;t drive, so it would be walking on foot to and from the nature trails etc.

Provence Rose Lodge is pretty near the Information Centre. Good hotel?

    8D7N to taiwan in May

Hi, been reading up this forum on taiwan. I am planning for my trip in May but need some help.

Is there any places that i have to avoid visiting as they will be closed during weekends or weekdays?

    Below is my initial itinerary:

Sat evening: Arrive @ Taipei %26gt; Shihlin Night Market

Sun : Yangmingshan %26gt; Beitou %26gt; Hell Valley %26gt; Danshui

Mon : Matyrs%26#39; shrine %26gt; National Palace Museum %26gt; CK Memorial Hall %26gt; Longshan Temple %26gt; Huaxi St. %26gt; Taipei 101 %26gt; Roahe Night Market

    Tues : Keelung %26gt; Yeliou %26gt; Jiefen

    Wed/Thurs : Hualien

Fri/Sat : Shopping (any places to recommend?) %26gt; Home sweet home

    Is my itinerary too rushed?

  • time controlled application running
  • Leofoo Village

May I know is Leofoo Village worth going? Is half day enough?

What is the easier way to go there using public transport?

  • Taipei -> Yehliu -> Jioufen

    Hi,

I will be visiting Taipei in November and want to take a day trip to Yehliu and Jioufen. Are there any buses that will take me from Taipei to these places (without having to go back to Taipei between Yehliu and Jioufen)? Thanks so much!!

    -Abu

    Taipei -%26gt; Yehliu -%26gt; Jioufen

HI, This is a copy of my earlier post:

Some comments on the Day trip up North.

Important Note: The GouGuang Bus North Station is now known as Taipei Intercity Bus Terminus.

I found it is not convenient to do Shifen on the same day if you really want to enjoy yourself.

I did the route as I recommend to all of you and found that doing just Yeliou,Jinguashi銆丣ioufen and Keelung is nice and not too tiring.

Take the Bus to Yeliou from Taipei Intersity Bus Teminus Counter 19 @NTD92/ per head.

The Buses are all new and Clean with good Airconditioning. The Drivers call out all the Major stops. There are toilets everywhere including one in Yeliou across from the New Temple being built when walking towards the Yeliou Scenic Area (No Soap or TP here). Yeliou Entry cost : NTD50 and NTD25 (Adult/Kids)

The Bus to Keelung is in front of the Convenience store across from where you get off at Yeliou.

In Keelung you have to cross the bridge to the other side to board bus to Jinguashi if coming from Yeliou:

    鈥hotobucket.com/albums/y97/nuttyazn/Taiwan/鈥?/a>

Since My Sis loves Scenery we spent a lot of time in each place銆乤nd we saw Tour buses come and go quickly.

Jinguashi also needs a lot of walking especially if you hit the trails.Lovely scenes and very rustic,

Entry NTD100/- (Cheaper for kids -Was not paying attention:()

    Forumers tip on getting off at 7/11 and walking down the steps is great too in Jioufen (No energy to walk up-did I mention something about getting old!!)However銆乨o this last before your return trip otherwise銆乷nce down銆乫ollowing the road out is residential area and leads to a large temple. There is a bus stop outside for buses that heads to Rueifang ,Keelung or Taipei.Lots of food here.';

Good to eat here first then walk it off before heading to Keelung Miaokow where you will also find lots of lovely local food as well.

In Keelung, getting to Miaokow: Getting off the bus銆亀alk back passed the Sea (Keelung River??)all the way to the otherside to the Macdonalds. Passing the shops in that street銆丮iaokow is on your left at the First Junction. Not difficult to find.

From Keelung Station you just cross the Street and walk along the Sea .......

    Taipei -%26gt; Yehliu -%26gt; Jioufen

    Hi nuttyazn,

    Thank you for the reply!!!

So I should take the Taipei Intercity Bus Terminus from Taipei to Yeilou. Then from Yeilou I can take a bus to Keelung from across the street where you I got off the first bus. But from Keelung how do I get to Jioufen and then back to Taipei? Also, do you happen to know how often these buses run?

    -Abu

    HI,

In Keelung, cross over to the other side , there is a Bus stop there for Jioufen and Jinguashi (Sign boards in English/Chinese LED)

Take same bus back to Keelung, visit Miaokow if you want to visit the Night Market and eat some good different food and return to Tapei by Bus or train. I am not really sure about the frequency but I did not wait more than 10 mins in any of the places for buses.

Lots of locals also follow the same route :) When you alight the bus in Keelung, you can see a lot of buses stopping across the road, head for that stop

P.S. If you do end up in a strange nice place by following the crowd to a new location, do let us know on your return :):) Just kidding.

Need Information about cabs in Wulai.

Hi, I am abit confuse abt Wulai. I read 2 travel books abt Taipei which says all vehicle must be put at Wulai%26#39;s entrance. But I also read some posting that we can take cab from one plc to anoher in Wulai. I am have book Meek%26#39;s cab. at 1st tot of going wulai, than we hb and I go hot spring, maybe meeky can drive the old folks around. But If the cab is not able to go in wulai I may have to change plan and go YMS with Meeky instead.

Can someone enlighten me? is the cab allow in wulai? Or could it be only special cab inside wulai are allow?

Need Information about cabs in Wulai.

Don%26#39;t worry. Cab is allowed in Wulai.

If the%26#39;tram%26#39; is working, Meeky will drop you at the entrance, where you can explore the street. Then take the %26#39;tram%26#39; up to the waterfall. Else Meeky will drive you up to waterfall.

    Hi Experts,

I%26#39;ll be traveling with my family and friends (4 adults/3kids) from 21/11 to 29/11. This is our general itinerary. Let me know if this plan makes sense. Pls advise if feel otherwise. Txs :-)

Day 1 - Arrival in Taipei, we%26#39;ll take a express train to Hualien

    Day 2 - Hualien

Day 3 - Rent a car from Hualien to Chingjing

Day 4 / 5 - Chingjing, Lushan Hotspring and Hehuanshan (worth going Lushan and Hehuanshan?)

Day 6 - Check out Chingjing in the morning, drive to Sun Moon Lake for sight-seeing. Will return car in Taichung. Take train back to Taipei.

Day 7 to Day 8 - Explore Taipei

Day 9 - Home Sweet Home

    I%26#39;ve a few questions :

    1) As for car-rental, can it be arranged to pick up in Hualien and return in Taichung? Any car rental company recommended for such arrangement?

    2) I went to the train website, the schedule is not out yet for Nov. Is it better to book in advance or it%26#39;s ok to book upon arrival.

    3) If we were to take a train upon arrival at CKC Airport, which train station is the nearest? Which is the train station departing from Sun Moon Lake?

    4) Any good taxi driver recommended at Hualien?

    Look forward to your advice:-)

Taipei - Hualien - Chingjing - Sun Moon Lake - Taipei (Nov)

    Hi, wahwah71,

I have planned for a similar itinerary but is on the reverse direction, ie from Taichung to Hualien.

Just to share on what I have gathered on car rental. We will be, very likely, renting from CarPlus: www.car-plus.com.tw

They have promotion on waiving the fee for renting from point A and returning at point B. Another promotion that they are offering is taking the high speed train and rent their car, they offer 15% discount on weekend and 30% on weekday. To enjoy both promotion, have to make booking 3 days in advance.

However, I remember someone mentioned in this forum that we need to ensure that the insurance coverage is in order as sometimes insurance premium will be excluded in order to bring down the price. As for this, I%26#39;ve yet to check with %26#39;CarPlus%26#39;.

Other car rental company for your consideration: www.easyrent.com.tw

    Hope this helps.

Taipei - Hualien - Chingjing - Sun Moon Lake - Taipei (Nov)

    Hi SnoopyTravel,

Txs for your recommendation. Btw, is it shorter distance from Airport to Nantou City (Sun Moon Lake) than to Hualien? I%26#39;ve checked, it%26#39;s about 3.5 hr from TPE to Hualien by express train. If it%26#39;s shorter, i may do sun moon lake first.

    Thanks.

    Hi, wahwah71,

I%26#39;m not sure about the distance, especially from the airport.

What I gathered was if taking direct bus from TPE to SML it will take about 4~5 hours. My plan is taking HSR to Taichung, takes about 50min to an hour, then drive to SML. From TC to SML should be abt 1.5~2 hours drive, if I got the info correct.

Personally I think to start off with Hualien and move on to ChingJing SML %26amp; Taichung is a better idea in terms of trip planning. I am planning on the reverse direction is because we will arrive on weekend and would like to avoid the weekend crowd in Hualien.

    Regards.

As HSR does not serve the eastern side of Taiwan, it would be easier to travel from TY to TC but I do agree with the above poster that ur initial itenerary is better.SML is pretty in the early morning n late afternoon so it would be worth while to stay overnight there to fully appreciate its beauty. In terms of trust worthy car rental Avis, carplus are both OK but do request for full insurance coverage.

    2. for train travel it is better to book in advance.

3.for train, board from TP, alight at Puli. HSR, TY-TC.

4.u do not need a cabbie since u%26#39;re renting a car, personally, I think driving is a better option over cabbie/ bus tour.

BTW, domestic flights do serve TP-HL, u got to transfer from TY international to Sung shan domestic though to catch the flight.FAREASTERN airline n transasia air serves TP-HL.Mandarin airline serves HL-Taichung.

    Thanks for all advise!

The day is getting closer and I%26#39;m getting real excited. Now, doing my final research :-)

This is our itinerary with more details:

Day 1 Upon arrival in Taipei, we%26#39;ll take a train to Hualien. We taking Tze Chiang Train, about 3 hrs from Taipei to Hualien.

Sad to know that HSR does go to Hualien :-(

Day 2 Visit Ocean Park and whale watching if available.

Day 3 Check out minsu, on the way to Chingjing (since we are driving), we%26#39;ll visit Taroko G. Half a day enough? Hope to reach Chingjing by early evening.

    Q) Pls advise the sequence in Hualien. I was told to visit Taroko after check out as we have to pass by Taroko on the way to the high way???

Day 4 Chingjing - Farm visit / Sheep show on Sat / Visit Lushan Hot Spring.

    Day 5 Chingjing - SML

Day 6 SML to Taipei, return the car at Taichung and take a train (HSR) back to Taipei.

Day 7 - 9 Taipei, Will visit Jiufen, Window of China, Ding Dong Sci center, Night markets, 101....(any recommendation?)

    Day 9 Home Sweet Home.

How%26#39;s the weather in Taipei? I heard the weather can go down -4 degree at Chingjing? Izit true? Need to start packing soon.

Hope the plan will work well and we%26#39;ll all enjoy this trip.

Will update when I%26#39;m back :-)

the route from HL to SML is just about right, half d is sufficient for toroko if u breeze by, but I would think an overnight stay would be nice too, especially if u put up at Toroko regent.

About Day 7, why are u missing out Leofoo? can cancel the Ding dong if time is short.

It%26#39;s cold in Ching jing now, best to bring a cardigan.

    Have a nice time.

Txs! Will visit Leofoo instead if it%26#39;s a better place.

Staying at minsu Ocean (nearer to train station and town). Don%26#39;t think have much time for Taroko G if we want to spend a day at Ocean Park. Kids will probably enjoy OP more.

    Hello all,

Sorry to bring up an old post.

I am intrigued by this post as our vehicles in Singapore are left hand drive while over at TW is Right hand.

With our license we are able to rent and drive their cars?

    Thanks!

    Hi cdriver,

International driver%26#39;s license is required, for foreigners, to drive around in Taiwan.

    Hope this answer your question.

cdriver, yes u could, just apply for an international license but i would strongly advice against driving through the central ridge as in addition to the left/right diff, Singapoeans are not really apt at driving mountanous roads, not to mention that the taiwanese drive recklously n seldom abides by the traffic regulations.

    Singaporeans

Last year, an unprecedented 3.37 million foreign tourists visited Taiwan, marking growth of 14 percent year-on-year and moving a step closer toward the government%26#39;s goal of luring 5 million visitors by 2008.

All major markets in the region reported marked growth in tourism, with the biggest increase from Singapore, at 42.17 percent

    Hmm......

I thk budget carriers flying into taipei really helps to bring the cost of air travel down. Just a year ago, i would never imagine myself coming to taiwan until the arrival of budget carriers that makes travelling more affordable.

Looking at the many forumers taking Jetstar Asia into Taipei proves that many are lured because of the affordable price. And not to forget the famous naruwan advertisements from the Taiwan Tourism Authority helps.

And yes, i will keep coming in future :)

    roy ng

I guess not jus those budget carries but oso those Taiwanese ';Idol'; dramas. I am not a drama craze n I never tout of visiting Taiwan too until I watched THE ROSE... smitten by the beauty of Taiwan esp Kenting. Though I din manage to visit Kenting during my first trip to Taiwan in 2004, I will for my next trip:)

Taiwan is real big and will take one many many days or even month (for extensive travel) to really complete the whole of Taiwan...

Hopefully more pple will visit other places of Taiwan too, not only Taipei;)

haha...yup i agree with rainyh......taiwan is more than just taipei! there r just too many other beautiful places....esp further south....eg: alishan, yushan, kenting etc.....

I will going to taiwan for the 3rd time in march this year.

Well, I been to those more well-known spots in taipei. Like sun-moon Lake, ken ting, kao xiong, yun lin and etc... but if u choose to go these places, u have to keep moving to other locations cause it can be normally done in a full day.

Where as taipei, is a gd starting place for first timers to go to. Since it is very accesible by trains and buses. Cant said much for the rest of the citys.

Wah... williee, u have been to so many diff part of Taiwan;)

I have to agree that transportation at Taipei is really good, except the last bus is quite early. But I m v impressed by their ';keep right'; policy. They really keep right be it peak or off-peak hour. That%26#39;s something which Singaporeans are still learning.

Anyway, TW is constructing their gao tie (equivalent to Jap%26#39;s bullet train) that will speed up travelling;) n Kaohsiung is also constructing their MRT...

By then, I guess more n more tourists will flood TW;)

But even though I been there, it more of a business trip rather than on holidays. So didnt stay long at each locations.

Except for kaohsiuang and kenting, which I really enjoy.

Ken ting, the beach is really good compared to our sentosa. Totally different. At least the scenry is way better rather than see ships.

Williee, I didn%26#39;t know what Singaporeans would think of Kenting, since you have your Sentosa----but from your comment, it seems that Kenting is quite different!

Well, in sentosa, for the beach areas, all u can do is sunbath, play volleyball and a little bit more.

Whereas in kending, u got the water sports. Love taking the banana ride. Always end up in the water. hahaha.

Scenery wise, our beach areas normally got those big ships docking at the seas so once in while, u get to hear those ships blowing their horns. So its a minus pt for that.

    Calicocat

A lot of the ';Play'; areas is Man made include the Swimming lagoon . It is not really natural. They also have a theme park and an Underwater World there.

Actually I prefer to go to East Coast Park area for a swim in the sea. When I used to live in Singapore we would do to Punggol, or off Jurong to fish overnight Friday to Sunday Morning. Changi used to get too crowded. Singapore used to have some nice beaches but lost a lot to Development and now a lot of places are created for ';Play'; but these places lack ambience.

  • advice on airport transfer

Hi, I%26#39;ll be travelling to taipei in march and my flight will reach at 12.30 in the morning. Can someone advice if it will be easy to catch a cab from the airport at that hour to my hotel (at Zhongshan) and how much it would cost? The hotel%26#39;s transfer is about TWD 1400 per way and since it%26#39;s just two of us, I find it rather expensive.

    advice on airport transfer

cab would still be available but I think there%26#39;ll be a midnight surcharge. We just did a roundtrip with E-go van recently and it costs us 1100NT per sector. There is a price drop as it used to cost 1300NT , probably due to the recent economic crush.

    advice on airport transfer

i think you can do it for under 1000 ntd if you can speak chinese and arrange a private car in advance. they are around 800ntd.

taxi is abt 1100ntd by the meter.

I can%26#39;t find any English sites, but i found plenty of traditional Chinese ones. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi there, we%26#39;ll be arriving there in March as well and landed at TPE about 10.30 at night. I%26#39;m also looking for a way to get to a hotel (which I%26#39;m also looking to book in Taipei city).. heard that it%26#39;d take about an hour from the airport. We are 2 females so, safety is a top list and price too. :)

Does anyone also know a cab for all day price? we want to go from taipei city hotel to nantou for tea plantation 1 day trip. Leave early am and come back evening.

    Hi pple,

we are a couple who will be traveling to Taiwan in 2 weeks time.

As our plane will arrive at Tao yuan international airport, and we actually have 2 plans in mind, could you please give us your advise which will be better.

    Thanks in advance!

Will arrive at Tao yuan airport at 5.40pm

Plan A: take 7pm TRA to Hua Lien, approximate arrival at Hua lien @ 9.50pm. Stay at a minsu (not yet decided) for the night and rest for day 2 - one day tour with Mr Looi (taroko) starting at 9am/ 10am. Will check out on Day 2 and tour till 7.30pm leave Hua lien for Taipei - checked in at TS hotel.

    OR OR %26gt;%26gt;

Plan B: Take the airport transfer and go straight to Taipei check in at TS hotel at 7pm then day 2, leave hotel at 7am, board 8am tze chiang train to Hua lien meet Mr looi, tour till 7.30pm board train back to Taipei again?

the reason why we suggest a Plan A but not sure is it feasible is becos we heard alot pple comments, It goos to stay over at Hua lien for 1 night.

    please give your comments!

if plan A is really feasible, where do we board the TRA from Tao yuan? Is it connected to Tao yuan airport or we must take a bus out from Tao yuan airport to the TRA station- Tao yuan?

  • Teahouse in Jiufen

May I know which tea house is nice in Jiufen in term of food and scenery? If we are not so much of a tea person, is it worth spending time in one of them?

wow... both look so nice... difficult to choose... I think we only have time and stomach to try one of them... we cannot go in to take picture if we are not eating there right?

    Which one is better?

    Shih Fen or Kee Lung?

    Hi guys!

I%26#39;m wondering if I can do Jiu Fen, Shih Fen %26amp; Kee Lung all together in 1 day? But I wanna come back Taipei around evening to have dinner at 浼嶈鑸规澘.

If I can only choose 2 places, is Shih Fen or Kee Lung more interesting? What are the highlights of these 2 places?

    Thx in advance,

    NaNa

    Shih Fen or Kee Lung?

Shih Fen-the biggest waterfall in Taiwan.

Keelung is only famous for its night market, but you want to enjoy the dinner at..

    Shih Fen or Kee Lung?

If not mistaken, Shihfen waterfall is still not open for public yet. I think Jiu Fen, JingGuaShi and Kee Lung would be enuf for whole one day. Dun miss out Keelung NM, one of my favourite NM there :)

浼嶈鑸规澘 is closer to Dan Shui or Shilin that area, so perhaps you can arrange again.

I heard my fren said 浼嶈鑸规澘 is not bad the food and atmosphere there although it%26#39;s abit exp.

I went to Pingshi 2 Saturdays ago just before Chap Goh M ei-to do the SKY lantern bit and was told that the Waterfall area in Shifen is still closed. Not really sure when it will reopen.

Thx for all your advise guys!

Let%26#39;s say I plan my itinerary like this...

    Friday

    - Fully day YMS (Sightseeing, dinner %26amp; hotspring)

    - Taipei 101 night view

    - Clubbing at Room 18

    Saturday

    - What can I do in the morning? Me staying at TS Hotel.

    - 12pm Lunch at Toilet Restaurant

    - Danshui Fisherman Wharf, Lover%26#39;s Bridge %26amp; Old Street

    - Dinner at Five Dime Restaurant

    - Shopping at Wu Fen Pu

    Sunday

    - Jiu Fen

    - Kee Lung

    - Brown Sugar Salsa Club

Can I add in anymore places to visit into the 3 days? Or it%26#39;s just nice?

    Cheers,
