Bests of Taiwan

I will be going to Taipei 11/4 to 15/4 with my sister. This is my 1st free and easy trip in Taipei. My hotel is located in Ximentin. Anybody is going to Taipei that time. How should I plan my trip? I want to go to Fung Jia and Silin night markets, anybody has an idea how to get there from Ximentin? Is is possible to visit Koushiong early in the morning and come back to Ximentin at night. Is it enough time? Any cheap and good CD shop located in Ximentin, thought of buying all Mayday Taiwan edition CD back to Singapore. What are the attractions in Taipei, which place must go? How to get to Taipei 101 from Ximentin? Any good bargins shopping mall around Ximentin?

Hotels in Taichung, west district or situn district?

Hi

Just checking if anyone knows the closest hotel in the West District to the national museum of fine arts. The address I am trying to be near is Chong-Ching Road, Situn district. Not sure if Galeria hotel is the best option for me?

Hotels in Taichung, west district or situn district?

It does not look like the Muesuem is too far from the train station.I would think any hotel in the area will do.

Anyway, here is an option:

    Thanks lu24759,

Will take into consideration of your suggestion.

Question: For the MRT,THSR,TRA,are they nearby to each other? Or in a Main station,we actually can choose three kind of transport???

I believe only Taipei Main Station gives you HSR, TRA and MRT access at the same time.

    Oh i see.

Now that should clear my confusion. Hee.

Mousehunt,i have read your travel blog. Very detailed and interesting.

    2) Late afternoon head to Danshui to go fisherman wharf to see sunset %26amp; lighting of lover%26#39;s bridge.

Since Taipei hotels already have their own thread on this forum, ';Recommended budget~moderately-priced hotels';, I thought Hualien could use such a thread, too. If you have any recommendations or reviews, you%26#39;re welcome to post them here.

Again, I have to say, I%26#39;ve never stayed at any of these hotels (except Bellevista), and have never even seen most of them; I%26#39;m merely offering ideas and suggestions that might help in your search for accommodations in Hualien. REVIEW OF BLUE OCEAN INN

I enjoyed my stay at Blue Ocean when I was in Hualien. It%26#39;s a really nice inn if you%26#39;re looking for a serene, relaxed holiday. What you see on the website: www.blueocean.idv.tw is really what you get!

It overlooks the Pacific Ocean with the Freeway in front. There%26#39;s a small balcony in all the ocean-facing rooms, where you could feel the breeze and simply enjoy the view. The only down side is the lack of public transport + shops in the area. But cab can be easily called in and costs around NT$300 - $350 to the city / train station. The Ocean Park is very nearby though (approx. 10 minutes walk).

Rooms are clean, spacious with all basic amenities provided for: air-conditioning, TV, fridge, 2 big double beds (if you get the rooms facing the ocean), bathroom + decent breakfast... A nice lady takes care and stays over at the inn (I heard some inns do not have a caretaker at all). Oh yes, there%26#39;s a small vegie farm behind the inn too...

Hi Swingcool, have you checked out this thread in your search for minshu?

Yup calicocat, after sending out my message, then I realised there is already this thread on Hualien hotels. Indeed, its very useful. Thats why it leads to my question on the ';Ding Jia';.

Actually, how big is Hualien? Does it really matter which area we stay? In city or by the beach? How do ppl usu get to their hotel from Hualien train station? Would it be too cold to stay by the beach (eg blueocean) in Jan?

Our main purpose in Hualien is to get to Taroko on the following day. How far and how long is it to get to Taroko from Hualien?

From Taroko back to Taipei, must we always get back to Hualien first to take a train?

Any useful info will be greatly appreciated.

    Left luggage at Chayi station

I am travelling to Taiwan in July and planning to go to Alishan by the forest train and spending a night there, on my way from Taipei to Kaoshiung. I am not sure the track will be fully functional then, and I am assuming I will have to do the 500m partly uphill walk. So, I do not want to carry all my luggage with me.

I suppose there is left luggage facilities at Chayi train station - the one in town for ';normal trains';, not the high speed ones - where I can leave my luggage for 24 hours. Can anyone confirm if there are lockers or manned luggage rooms at Chayi station?

    Weather

May I know the weather in Taiwan recently. Going to pack up for our coming trip tis weekend! Thanks

    Weather

These past few weeks our winter and summer clothes have been going in an out of the closet, it%26#39;s been so changeable! The only thing I haven%26#39;t been wearing is heavy outer wear. I%26#39;d pack clothes that you can wear in layers---light clothes, nothing heavy---and one light jacket for those cool days/evenings.

    Weather

    one week forecast,

    cwb.gov.tw/V5/鈥eek_forecast.htm

    it%26#39;s 12 degees right now.

Just heard on the news that temperatures will drop this weekend, so perhaps something a little heavier than what I suggested!!

Hooray! 5 days more to go before yr Taiwan trip, Berries!

As forecasted from 10 to 29 degrees, the weather is indeed erratic.

As U%26#39;ll be moving from one different part of Taiwan to another in quick stays %26amp; visits, U can expect different weather in the places U go as well. :-)

    1. A key tip is to be ready to keep the kids warm - especially when the temperature drops in the morning, at night n in the higher regions U go.

    2. A good tip for kid%26#39;s clothings when travelling is to bring n wear old, used clothes. Clothes which U can discard after wearing - to save packing, baggage %26amp; $$ (from laundry).

    Miaoli Strawberry Farm

I would be visiting Miaoli, Taiwan in April 2009 to their Strawberry Farm. What i would like to know is if i do buy the 1 or 2 bottles of strawberry wine, am i allowed to bring it out of taiwan? If so is there a tax to it and how much would that be?

    Miaoli Strawberry Farm

    Hi Aik Buddy,

Can I ask how do you get to Miaoli Strawberry farm from taipei? I%26#39;m interested to visit the farm.

    Thanks.

    Miaoli Strawberry Farm

am also going there early April 09. Did you watch the Kind Thirfy last week ? They recommended this farm as well. From the travel guide, it indicate from Taipei Main station take he train to Miaoli, Then take the Dahu or Jhoulan bound Hsinchu Bus to Shangfuji stop and walk to the farm ... sounds complciated right ... am loss too

saw this website ... hope its useful to you .

    http://www.dahufarm.org.tw/html/homepage.htm

interested to visit there too...how do we go from taipei??

hi, see the remarks i posted on Posted on: 10:25 am, February 18, 2009

eh you%26#39;ll never watch tvbs news is it? the strawberries all plucked already no more, left the pinkish damn off ones. don%26#39;t go lah waste money. all the way to miaoli somemore. and the wine not like damn exciting, gimmick only lah come on fellow singaporeans, use your brain.

I was there last December cuz it was the strawberry season. Went to the DAHU strawberry farm but they didn%26#39;t provide strawberry picking services. Instead, they do sell alot of strawberry made products like wine, cookies, and souvenirs. However, the whole stretch at Dahu are all strawberry farms! So any of them will have the plucking strawberry services. But I think now the strawberry season is kinda over, so I%26#39;m not really sure whether are they still fresh strawberries for plucking.

For transport, it%26#39;s really easy. From Taipei Main station, take the railway train to MIAOLI. Alight at Miaoli station, there%26#39;s a small bus terminal. Just ask around where you can take a Hsin Chu bus heading to DAHU... and just show them the address of DAHU STRAWBERRY FARM. all the bus drivers know the place very well. and ask him to inform you when arriving. Note that the bus journey from MIAOLI station to the strawberry farm is 1hr.

    Hope this helps.

I visited Dahu Wineland Resort during my recent trip to Taiwan.

From Miaoli Railway Station, take a Hsinchu bus heading to Dahu (大湖). Alight at Dahu Wineland Resort (大湖酒莊). It is sited along the main road where the bus passes by a huge replica of a yellow wine bottle. You can%26#39;t miss it. Fare: NT$62 Travel time: About 50 mins.

i plan to visit on 6th april, by than is the strawberry season over??

so if i am going how much time do i need to visit the whole area?

Strawberry picking is during the cool months of January to February, although it’s possible a month before or after the season. January to April is considered a good time to visit Dahu Wineland Resort and the strawberry farms.

How much time is needed to visit the whole area depends on how detail you want to explore the place. There are stores selling strawberry wine, strawberry shaved ice and lots of strawberry products. The exhibition hall to learn about strawberry farming is on the 3rd storey of the main building. There is a landscape garden at the roof level. Children amusement area (I think it operates on weekends and public holidays only) is at the rear of the buildings. The strawberry tourist farm is near the children amusement area. Vendors sell fresh strawberry at the front of the buildings.

Nice and Cheap hotel in Taipei

    Hi peeps,

Was intending to travel to taipei for a week, wondering at which locations and hotel will be good to stay in with reasonable rates.. any good suggestions? :)

Nice and Cheap hotel in Taipei

What is your definition of reasonable rates and what type of facilities do you need from the hotel?

Nice and Cheap hotel in Taipei

Rainbow Hotel, is cheap, and located in the heart of Ximending. But, it%26#39;s extremely popular for obvious reasons....so, book early :)

I tried booking, but since it was last minute, i didnt get it.

ONE STAR is another popular and reasonably priced hotel...walking distance to Taipei Main Station.

I just booked: Fullerton 41 for SGD 150, near Da%26#39;an mrt station, and Beauty Hotel, HsuanMei, for SGD 130, (abt 10 mins walk from Zhongshan)

oh, another one that I nearly went ahead was Dandy hotel (99 SGD) small, and pretty new boutique hotel, opposite Da%26#39;an Park, near Da%26#39;an mrt too (from the map) :)

It%26#39;ll be my first time there, so I hope they are good :D But the reviews looked good, so I went ahead and booked, since I%26#39;m flying off this Friday, and all other ';popular'; hotels are already fully booked! hehe...

    hope this helps!

    Winniel

    Jay Chou new store

    HI!

I know Jay Chou used to have a store MONI but he closed it. He opened one called: Phantac.

Does it still exist? Does anyone have an address?

Does he have other stores besides his Mr. J restaurant?

  • Seeking suggestions on a 4 day visit.

I know 4 days are not long enough to do any indepty travel for Taiwan, but that is all we have, as this is one segment of a 11 setments trip so we try to make the most out of it.

We will fly from HKG to TPE to arrive on a Saturday afternoon (06/13 2:15PM), and leave for ICN on a Wednesday late afternoon (06/17 5:10PM).

Our original thought was to take the HSR to Taichung immediately after our arrival. However, after some consideration, we now decide to spend the first night at Taipei, and leave our rolleraboards at the hotel or at train station locker, if there is such facility during our train trip to the South.

Given our tight schedule, we dont plan to visit SML or Tairoko, but not sure whether Kenting is worth an overnight - beach is not an attraction to us given where we are from, and the places we would have travelled before hitting Taiwan (New Zealand and Australia) - so unless Kenting has something other than beach to offer...

Your suggestions on the following itinerary are highly appreciated:

Day 1 - arrive at 2:50PM, head to Taipei. Visit 淡水老街 and 士林夜市. Not sure if 新光三越 is also possible in this time slot. If 新光三越 is just a big shopping / dept store, then it is no big deal if we skip it. Overnight at Taipei, preferrable at hotel near Taipei Train Station. Recommendations welcome.

Day 2 - Take morning HSR to Taichung, spend a few hours at Taichung. Then take HSR to Kaoshung. (I know HSR does not go direct to Kaoshung but very near - need additional train or bus to Kaoshung town.

Overnight at Kaoshung. Recommendations for hotels welcome.

Day 3 - Take train from Kaoshung towards East Coast, and go North all the way back to Taipei. This is to see the East Coastal area of the island. I have not figured out which train is the right train to go this direction?

I dont think we could afford to stay in 花蓮 for the night, because we want to spend Day 4 in Taipei for National Palace Museum. So we need to return to Taipei for the night.

Day 4 - Taipei, National Palace Museum, evening to 陽明山 for the Sunset and night view of Taipei. I haven%26#39;t figured out where exactly it is, the ';Lover%26#39;s Slope';, supposedly the best place to view the lights of Taipei.

Day 5 - since our departure is in late afternoon, we can still explore places such as 天母, 敦化南路, XMD...

I believe both 天母, 敦化南路 are at the Eastern part of Taipei - are they close to each other?

Head for Taoyuan Airport at 2:00pm for the 5:10pm flight - would this be enought time? Or we need to start the bus trip at 1:00pm?

I understand this is a trip just the surface views. However it seems doable now with HSR. If I would have to give up Round the Island trip, I would still do the Eastern Railroad trip just for the scenery.

Thanks a lot for anyone%26#39;s suggestions!

Seeking suggestions on a 4 day visit.

Kenting is basically a beach thing, there are some geographic attractions and temples, but if you have only four days, would suggest you skip it as journey there eats up too much time.Taichung and Kaoshiong has got relatively less to offer as compared to Alishan, SML and Taroko; but these are scenic sights , if city is more your thing, then the original itinerary would be OK.Mitshigushi is indeed only a shopping mall.

Seeking suggestions on a 4 day visit.

Where do you plan to visit in Taichung? If you dont have any place in mind, in my opinion, you do not need to stop in Taichung. In addition, there is 20 minutes travel time from HSR station to the city of Taichung. FYI You may already know this-Weekend days are busy days to travel on HSR with much higher fare.

I dont have any particular place to see in Taichung. It just seems to be a natural spot on the way down to Kaushung.

My idea is just an Island Circular on the train - and hopefully the train-ride itself would offer a glimpse of the countryside of Taiwan.

Regarding SML, I look at its pictures on the official website, and feel it is more or less like the lakes in so many national / state parks in North America, with the surrounding mountains being LESS attractive.

Also it seems to and from SML from the main highway is a few hours each way - that is another consideration.

If Taichung and Kaoshung, and even Tainan, have not much to offer, may be we should concentrate in the East Coast?

Does Tairoko always require hiring a guide with car?

How about self-drive by renting a car from Taipei, and do the East Coast at our leisure?

    Thoughts?

Kaoshung, Tainan and Hualien have more places to see than Taichung. Most people stop in Taichung on the way to SML. SML is a very touristy place and commercialized. Taroko is a natural marble gorge park with breathtaking scenery. Yes, you have to be in a car to visit the park. I would recommend hiring a cabby in Hualien. You can even leave Taipei to Hualien early early in the morning and return to Taipei the evening. In the train between TPE and Hualien you will see country side, pacific ocean and Taiwan central mountains.

Do consider to visit CKS Memorial Hall in Taipei. It is like everyone has to visit Lincoln Memorial once in Washington D.C..

In this case, should we nix Kaoshung and Tainan, and just concentrate in Hualien and the Tairoko nat%26#39;l park?

Should I research this forum to find rec for reliable cabbies?

I wonder if having a rental car would be more convenient - drive the east coastal highway and to the mountain park.

If we have time to spare in Taipei, we would pay a viait to the CKS Memorial. The Nat%26#39;l Palace Museum remains the top priority.

    Stroller Friendly: Taipei?

Hello! I%26#39;m just wondering if I should bring a stroller for my 2 yr old daughter...she don;t like to sit in it much, and not sure if Taipei in general is stroller friendly?

(I intend to check out Taipei 101, the Ximending area, and Yangmingshan as well.)

If not, then I end up pushing it around, and trying to catch hold of my daughter as well, hehehe....

We intend to take train or bus to Cingjing Farm, and Sun Moon Lake in the middle of our trip as well. So, if I can do without the stroller, it%26#39;s a big load less for us.

    Pls advice...thanks!

    Stroller Friendly: Taipei?

All 3 areas that you mentioned in Taipei are fine for strollers.

Cingjing and SML are less ideal for strollers due to the steep slopes and the large number of steps. Many sights are accessible only by staircases.

    Stroller Friendly: Taipei?

The streets in Taipei will accommodate the stroller but once your out of the main city sidewalks are a think of the past, they are small, irregular in size, have steps every few feet and are not the best even for walking.

    Wulai

I have been to Taiwan many times as my wife is Taiwanese. On this trip 2008 we visted the area known as Wulai. It is a beautiful little town surrounded by mountains and the most amazing temple on top of the mountain. You get there by travelling on the most unique railroad seen (takes about 5 minutes from the township) and then by taking the cable car over the valley to the top. After you have visted the mountain top temple you can return to the river and soak in the natural hot springs (the locals bathe in it). The town has one curious aspect. Many of the shops have penis shaped souvenirs, I asked my wife what it was all about and she said fertility. Whilst your there have the fried bees and taste the sticky rice in BAMBOO. Overall a great day.

    Wulai

    Thanks Ncc!

    best inexpensive hot springs

Wife and I will be in Taiwan April 7th -14th looking to spend a few days soaking in the hot springs. Not looking to spend a fortune just soak in the waters. Any ideas on which one?

    best inexpensive hot springs

A basic, no-frills hot spring would be the Beitou Public Hot Spring, walking distance from MRT Xinbeitou Station.

    taipei.emmm.tw/index_m.php鈥?/a>

Is this what you had in mind?

    best inexpensive hot springs

Wulai public hot spring is free!!!

Calicocat, I think this a place we would like to see but I couldn%26#39;t find the english version. We would like to pay $150.00 a day or less for the two of us. For staying with hot springs. We are not looking for a spa with tubs ,we like pools. We just started our search yesterday . In Taiwan a week then off to Thailand for a month for our third visit. It is our fifty year aniversary.

Wow, how nice, congratulations! That%26#39;s such a special occasion.

While some do stay overnight at a hot spring, most people opt for a day package of hot spring + optional meal. It isn%26#39;t common to stay several nights in a row, since there usually isn%26#39;t anything to do in the area---unless, of course, they specifically wish to spend several days at a hot spring. Do you have a particular preference; are you okay with traveling a long distance (1.5 hrs.) by train or bus; and would you consider spas whose websites are in Chinese only?

Thanks for the help. I will wait for my book on Taiwan then have fewer questions.

Go to Wulai and use the natural hot spt=rings in the river. You can also take the cable car to the top of the mountains to visit the temple and then finish of the day with fried bees (they are great just like little chips) and sticky rice wrapped in Bamboo. Oh yeah this town has the best assortment of cakes and sweets.

    leofoo village themepark review

just got back from taipei on 14th dec 2008. visited leofoo village. its a reasonable priced themepark. very suitable for young children to adults. there are many rides catered for ages 2 to 12.the best part for my 3 year old son was walking thru the jurasic park with replicas of dinosaurs. No long queues and it takes about an hour from downtown taipei to get there. u can take a bus from jingan station or hire a cab which cost us 900twn one way (there were 6 of us so its worth it).

    leofoo village themepark review

The price of the cab was reasonable, too. That%26#39;s really helpful, to know the cost of going to Leofoo by cab. Glad your family enjoyed Leofoo. Thanks for posting!

Great to know ! We will go to this theme park this time...

Can you tell me which rides would be TOO scary for my 3 and 5 year old?

And do we just hail a cab off the street to get there?

Did you go early in the morning until it closes?

How%26#39;s the food in the park?

    How%26#39;s the washroom facilities?

    Thanks.

Yes, Leo Foo Village is a class of her own.

Although it has limited rides, the theme park is large-spaced enough to occupy a day of leisure %26amp; fun!

To go to Leo Foo, the forums here suggested to take the E-Go bus. In Taipei, take Mrt n alight at Jing An Mrt station n look for E-GO bus stop beside statn. Fare: estimated TWD120.

While waiting at Jing Ann statn bus stop, U may also be offered a taxi journey there by cabbies ';licensed'; to fetch visitors to the theme park. The cabbie will explain to U how it works..

Essentially U pay TWD100 per pax for a comfortable cab ride of abt 40 mins. We were told it%26#39;ll take abt an hour by bus..

What rides are suitable for a 3 %26amp; 5 years old?

I remember only 2. That is, when accompanied by an adult, particularly for the 3 yr old kid.

2 rides: Flying toucan %26amp; Bumboat.

Besides the rides, Leo Foo Village has a Zoo, Safari %26amp; fun spaces to discover n enjoy.

We enjoyed Leo Foo. May U all too.

    TA :-)

    TaipeiDreams.com

    Oh, I missed these..

    Washrooms in Leo Foo?

They were excellent. Easily available, clean. :-)

    Food?

There are restaurants. Also kiosks selling refreshments all over. We bought TWD70 BBQ squid from a kiosk.. Too huge a serving each of us struggled to finish our share haha..

We enjoyed Leo Foo. It was a delightful ';escape'; in our 8-days tour of Taipei, Taiwan in Nov 08.

    TA :-)

thanks. only TWO rides suitable ? That%26#39;s not many.

Will definitely try to visit it this trip.

    U%26#39;re welcome, Katetam.

Maybe a picture (actually album!) speaks better.

I found this Sam L%26#39;s guy snapshots of his happy family moments in Leo Foo:

    www.flickr.com/photos/samleong/486400225/

The theme park is divided by regions such as American West %26amp; South Pacific zones. The outdoor Zoo features carnivores %26amp; herbivores, n a Safari-style bus tour through the park.

As I mentioned, I%26#39;m sure the sheer delight %26amp; fantasy of Leo Foo has lots more to offer kids - not just the 2 rides I highlighted. :-)

Amazing! I just found another album of a happy family @ Leo Foo Village:

    flickr.com/photos/鈥?/a>

May U enjoy a great time with yr family in Taiwan.

Call this number for cab:0921-984-658. Call him one day in advance to book. He will pick you up from your hotel. Yes we were there about 11 am and leave only when they close at 5pm (winter).

Lots of toddler friendly rides, no worries. As for food, they have a good variety ie rice, noodles etc. Toilet facility is good.

    No complains at all.

    Have a good trip.

    thanks jackcatho,

the taxi driver you posted, does he give good rates for Leofoo? how much did you pay from Taipei to Leofoo? Thanks again !

We paid ntw900 from Jingan Station.

Local tour in taipei- book upon arrival

    hello,

This is my first time to taipei, kinda excited over it.

Currently, thinking of whether to pre-book local tour ( bring us around to the few famous hot spots) or rather to book with any local tour that i could find upon arrival in the airport..not too sure if the latter one will be TOO risky..

Anyway i%26#39;m going there 8D7N.. currently i only make booking for air ticket + accommodation.

Any advice on the FEW DEFINITELY places(e.g sight-seeing/temples) that i must visit..

SHiLin night market and Wu fen pu are inside my listing .. :)

Local tour in taipei- book upon arrival

I booked 2 Taipei tours with Have Fun Travel before I arrived in Taiwan:

    www.havefuntravel.tw/list_hotel_lobby.asp

    1. The City Tour during the day was good, although it consisted of me, another tourist, the guide, and the driver. I guess it wasn%26#39;t too busy that day. The only part I could do without was the stop at the ';Handicraft Center'; which is nothing but an over-priced souvenir shop.

    2. I also did the Park %26amp; Hot Spring tour but this one wasn%26#39;t as good. I was joined by 4 other tourists, and althogh the park is nice, I could have easily went there myself. The hot spring bath was at some old place with zero atmosphere. The baths were in a dungy basement and wasn%26#39;t worth the trip.

    3. I also did a non-Taipei trip with this company (the one-day tour to Taroko Gorge) and this was the best one. If you%26#39;re traveling solo, then this would be a good option. If you have a couple more people with you, then you can hire a personal driver and guide like others have done on this board.

    newbie to taipei 5d 4n f&e

hi all,i be going there on 29april 09,so pls guide me any nice place to visit and shopping.

me stay at xmd king shi hotel.many thanks

    newbie to taipei 5d 4n f%26amp;e

Really depends on what you want to do.

XMD itself is already a shopping and eatery area. You will find Ah Zhong Mian Xian, which is famous in Taipei.

Danshui Old street will be interesting to shop and eat. Try the Muah Chee there.

Eslite Bookstore will be a place for you if you are keen to buy books, CDs and DVDs. It is opened 24 hours.

Visit some of the night markets,eg. Shilin, Shi Tah etc.

Wufen Pu will be where you want to go for clothings, though you can also find some street stalls along Zhongxiao road.

The vicinities around Zhongxiao Fuxing and Taipei Railway stations are also interesting to walk around. Plenty of shopping, cafes, eateries.

And if you have time, I would also suggest you make a trip to Taroko which is near Hualian. It is 2 - 3 hours by train from Taipei to go to Hualian. You can depart early in the morning and return in the same evening, if you do not mind the long hours. Otherwise, just spend a night in Hualian. Taroko is simply beautiful. You will love it.

Visit the town of Wulai if you like mountains, hot springs to bathe in (free in the river), I have a report on this with Trip Adviser.

Also visit shrine of Sun Yat Sen and watch the changing of the guards its quite awesome. If you have some time go to a restuarant called Modern Toilet the kids will love it just for the novelty but also the food is great. Shilin night market has the best shopping.

    Trip Report - Thanks everyone

hey taoyuan airport xchange rate is how much ?

    Trip Report - Thanks everyone

If I did not remember wrongly, it is 22.4 or 22.5.

    Mousie

Me going to bangkok again....Well with that S$178 return on Jetstar hard to resist........I did try to Taipei but that set me back to about S$380 so i gave in to BKK instead :D.........Got that Novotel Siam Square via Accor super sale....2 room for S$135....(CHEAP!!)

Now I wanna ask U something....about going to Chinatown at night in BKK.....(Cos I dun go Chinatown at night before; even when I was working there)...

How to go to the place where U had dinner of Oyster omelette, Tom Yum etc......(Me not into sharky fin).

Exact location from White Orchid Hotel if possible.

Is Chinatown still as busy as daytime?

    Thank U....^__^

    mousehunt got msn ?

    Hi MeOnly,

The way to reach the oyster omelet stall in Chinatown is easy.

Take a cab to Chinatown and get the driver to drop you on the right side of the road. Do not go too further into Chinatown, maybe 50m once you enter the busy street of Chinatown.

Get down the cab and continue to walk along the traffic flow. You will reach a side road that has tables for customers. The staff will be wearing green polo. The other side of the side road is another stall that their staff wear red polo. I have tried both and both are ok to me. However, my local friend there says the green polo stall is better. I ate the one in wit the green polo uniform.

It is actually very near to White Orchid hotel. Walk slowly and you will not miss it.

As for Chinatown in the morning, it is as busy as ever. As a matter of fact, it is even busier than in the night.

Damn, you got a good deal in air tix and hotel.

    Have fun!!!

    Hi Kaion,

I do not have MSN. But if you have any questions, please feel free to post it here. I believe all of us will be more than willing to help.

Glad you enjoyed your visit, Mousehunt, and thanks for coming back to share your nice report and beautiful photos. And congratulations on your good health!

I didn%26#39;t realize that Mr. Lu was expecting a call from me---are we referring to Mr. Lu of Hualien, with whom I%26#39;ve never had any contact?

Hiya Me^Only! Good to see you back, and as a DE for Singapore now!

    Hi calicocat,

It is not you who recommended Mr Lu (Hualien) in the forum. Then the next person I can think of Nutty.

Mr Lu mentioned that it is a lady teacher that started the recommendation. I wonder who she is.

BTW, I have set my sight on Alishan for my Taiwan trip in 2011! :p

Glad U had such a rejuvenating time together in Taiwan, Mousehunt.

  • Ximending Party World KTV

    1. Ximending (西門町) is very big. My friend told me that the Party World (钱柜)KTV is not easy to find if first time go there. Anyone can gives me the direction to the Ximending Party World KTV?

    2. Is Cashbox and Party World the same KTV?

    Ximending Party World KTV

the KTV is actually called Cashbox Partyworld. so it%26#39;s the same KTV. :)

    the address is: 台北市中華路一段55號(中華路衡陽路口; 捷運西門站4號出口)

    www.trtc.com.tw/img/ALL/Route2200/086.jpg

it%26#39;s quite easy to identify from XMD. just Exit 4 from the MRT station. or cross the pedestrian roads opp XMD Exit 6. it can be easily identified so no worries. :)

    Ximending Party World KTV

    Hi cosystar

I think the one u referring to is a building by itself so if u look up the sky u should be able to see the Cashbox logo on top of the building.

Yes the whole building is KTV not like ours so small... haha.

I%26#39;ve been there once n u know what.. there is a toilet attached to the KTV room. Lolz. Quite a good experience there like going to hotel lobby. Enjoy!!!

    1. It is not difficult to find lar..very near to Ah Zhong Mian Xian.

    2. Cashbox is one whole grand building which u will definitely not miss out.

    Partyworld is cheaper than Cashbox.

    King's Town location

I read in this forum that in order to go to King%26#39;s Town Hotel, riding the MRT, one must pay NTD6 to enter the rear area to arrive at king%26#39;s town.

We%26#39;re gonna stay in this hotel this coming April, does this mean that we need to pay NTD6 every time we cross the railway station???

Is there a way that we won%26#39;t need to pay the NTD6 fee just to go back and forth from the hotel???

    King's Town location

I had been stayed the hotel last week,I payed everytime I took the MRT and crossed the railway station .

The only time I did not pay is that time I back to Hotel from Houyi MRT station ,coz don%26#39;t need to pass through the rail station, and I took a long walk.

    King's Town location

really?!! so we really need to pay the fee then

o well, thanks for the reply anyways! (^_^)

Can we bring water for baby onboard plane?

I%26#39;ve never bring baby onboard a plane before and I need to bring along her stuff such as hot water flask and a few milk bottles filled with water, as well as her medicine (in case check-in luggage lost). Any idea whether I will have problem with the custom? Thanks a lot!

Can we bring water for baby onboard plane?

In Taiwan, hot water providing by drinking machine is available in the airport%26#39;s waiting rooms and all the airplanes.so all you need is an empty flask and bottles.

Can we bring water for baby onboard plane?

But if we want to bring along some, will it be a problem? As I don%26#39;t want to look around for hot water when my baby need it.

SnowyPanda, which airline are U flying into/ out of Taiwan?

For Jetstar, their regulations allow baby milk, medicine as stated:

    ';e) Exceptions will be made for medications, baby milk/foods and special dietary requirements in LAGs form. These items will be subjected to additional checks and verification at the screening point;';

U may want to check with yr airline for further details.

    We%26#39;ll be flying SQ.

I%26#39;ve tried asking them before but they sound unsure. I tried to call CAAS (not sure whether they are the one setting the rules...) but no one answers. I should have check this out earlier... very disorganised nowadays...

Don%26#39;t know will they confiscate my hot water flask and milk bottles or not... coz it%26#39;s definitely much more than 100ml...

We have to surrender our 150ml mineral water bottle all the time going thru the international custom, but in your case where a baby is in toll, I%26#39;m not sure if they%26#39;ll make an exception. You may want to call China Airlines%26#39; office is Singapore to check, they should know.

  • Help needed!!

    Hi all,

I will be travelling to Taiwan on 17-27 March.

I intended to visit Pingshi and from what I have read from the forum, in order to get there, I have to take the train from Ruifang. However, when I was checking the time table and trying to book the train ticket online, it says that the route/train is not valid.

Can anyone help teaching on how can I purchase the ticket for Ruifang to Pingshi?

    Thanks alot =)

    Help needed!!

Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) train schedule: new.twtraffic.com.tw/TWRail_EN/index.aspx

To list the train schedule on the Pinghsi railway branch line.

Select From: Others “Taipei / Rueifang”

To: Others “Ping-hsi Line / Pingsi

Fare: NT$28 Travel time: 35 to 46 mins

    TRA train ticket prices: service.tra.gov.tw/tw/ticketprice/excel.aspx

    TRA station distances: …tra.gov.tw/tw/CP/11366/mileages-1.aspx

You can purchase the Pingsi one-day pass NT$54 for unlimited train rides for the day along the Pingsi branch line.

Train stations (in sequence) on the Pingsi branch line (Rueifang – Jingtong) are:

    Rueifang %26gt; Houtong %26gt; Sandiaoling %26gt; Dahua %26gt; Shifen %26gt; Wanggu %26gt; Lingjiao %26gt; Pingsi %26gt; Jingtong (terminal)

    Help needed!!

The Pingshi Line is a free-seating train with no booking or purchase of specific seats---thus the ';not valid'; notice. (Tip: The best seats are at the very front, next to the driver. ;-))

Thank you very much taiwanDIY and calicocat for your help (^.^)

    Hair Dryer

a pretty silly question to ask. haha.. but is there hair dryer provided in Royal Castle Hotel? Is it good? as in the strength of the blower...

    Hair Dryer

Dunno about the hotel, but in general, strnegth of hair dryer here is weak compared to S%26#39;pore, probably due to diff in voltage? And you can%26#39;t bring your own either, as the electricity here runs on 110V ,unless, of course, u have an adaptor.

    Hair Dryer

Welcome to the Taiwan forums, HungryAgnes.

That%26#39;s a real travel thing to know actually. In fact, we were quite surprised when our powered hair dryer (from home) blasted a weak hum in our Taipei hotel stay haha!

Yes, like most Taipei 3-stars hotels, Royal Castle has hair dryer in the rooms.

    agoda.com/asia/鈥oyal_castle_hotel.html

If U bring along a spare hair dryer for another person%26#39;s use, then it%26#39;ll need an adaptor to connect it between dryer %26amp; hotel power point. Btw yr stuff like handphone/ camera charger etc will need this adaptor too.

    No worries, Agnes.

    Glad U found yr answers.

Do get 2 pcs of the adaptor.

There%26#39;ll usually be at least 2 power points in the hotel room.

U can use one for yr hair dryer, the other for yr other electrical accessory usage.

    Riviera Hotel vs. Brother Hotel

Hi, can anyone please tell me which hotel is more convenient to most of the tourist attractions? In Taipei this weekend and looking to make the most of my time!!!

    Riviera Hotel vs. Brother Hotel

    Hi

Brother is in town next to MRT stop.

Riviera is about 8 mins walk to Yuanshan MRT stop-not tiring in this comfortable weather.

Just behind Suangcheng St - The war zone - full of pubs e.t.c.

I believe both hotels have won awards e.t.c.

In Taipei once you are at the MRT stop-most places are within your reach.

Freego Bus from Taoyuan Airport to Royal Castle Hotel

    1. Where do I buy the freego bus tickets and how much does it cost?

    2. Does the freego transport stop at outside Royal Castle?

    3. When returning from Royal Castle to Taoyuan airport, where do I buy the freego bus tickets?

Freego Bus from Taoyuan Airport to Royal Castle Hotel

    1) From the Freego bus counter in the Arrival hall (Look for the bus counters-follow the signs)

    2)Yes

    3)Pay the bus driver

You take the Parcel to the Post office, they will weigh it and tell you the Postage.
